I felt the same way about MF lenses for a long time. But then I came
across a Samyang 28-200/4.0-5.6 in a thrift store and gave it a try. It's
every bit as good as my primary lenses. Of course, this is a MF lens, but I
much prefer them.
I also tried a Vivitar 28-200/3.5-5.3 with similar results. Neither of
these will replace the Vivitar TX 75-260/4.5 that I use for field work, but
they are both fine for casual photography.
