I'd agree in general that modifying a documentary image is not desirable,
however from an aesthetic point of view it makes your image stronger.
Check this article which relates to how cropped images were used by the
Australian government to distort the appearance of an incident (as well as
actually lying about the facts !):

Thanks. I like the less grainy conversions but still prefer the color. I
left the glove box and medical form to show that it was a clinic - the
surroundings don't exactly look like a medical clinic except for those two
things. I agree the box could be toned down but not removed. I don't
usually remove or add things to photos for documentary use. Cropping is OK
though!
