The optional part was their attendance at the field trips.  The reason  I 
made them optional (although they were essential) was to avoid the  
conversation about reducing the price because someone couldn't make a field  
trip. I 
was going to have to be there regardless of  their showing up  or not and my 
 plan was to get paid even when someone else decided to sleep  in.    BB
