We don't have hornets in NZ, but I've read that when butterflies (species not
remembered) were freely flying around a forest clearing (size unspecified),
and a hornet or two appeared, suddenly there was not even one butterfly to
be seen.
I'm guessing that hornets are meat-eaters (butterflies in particular ) and the
butterflies can hear the specific pitch of hornet wings, from quite a distance
away.
