I went and double-checked the setting, and I have it at centre-weighted
averaging. I set it up this way after getting the E-500 so that it would be

That is something I will have to look into. I do have a wrap-around
eyecup that I bought for better viewing, and now that I know about adjusting
the eyepiece diopter I can make use of it since I can dispense with the
reading glasses.

The more I think about this, the more inclined I am to revert back to
my earlier technique of surveying the subject and background with a
hand-held meter. If the contrast is too harsh, then a diffusor is used to
darken the subject or fill flash is used to brighten the background.
