That would put it into the earlier formulations--I think the second,
but I doubt that ANY 100/2.8 really is a slouch.
As to the close-up capabilities of the lens, I put extension tubes
behind it and fire away. Although it lacks some sort of corrective
floating optic, I surely haven't missed it.
These days, for macro/field capability, I'm awefully spoiled by that
14-54 on the E-1. But for artistic merit, the old 100/2.8 is hard to
beat (along with the 200/4).
