I don't like ball heads for just this reason. You need to hold them while you tighten down the locking mechanism...then things shift when you let go. That is mostly a problem when shooting with large telephoto lenses. some people say you can set the ball friction so you don't need to hold the camera and lens but I have not found that to work. For really accurate work the geared head is my choice now. It's gotta be good cause Walt recommended it. /jim -----Original Message----- From: owner-olympus@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:owner-olympus@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Mike Sent: Monday, December 22, 2003 11:34 PM To: olympus-digest@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [OM] tripods Any ball head users have trouble with the head shifting when being locked down? I have to anticipate the shift and focus a couple degrees to the left before locking down. It usually takes a few tries to end up with the proper frame with a telephoto mounted. I'm using a manfrotto proball 308. Maybe I should try something else? The $300 heads aren't in the budget. Is there anything better for under $100? I need a ball head for packability. The Giotto medium head looks pretty good.
