Mike,I have the exact same problem with my giotto medium head so that route probably won't do for you. I am seriously looking at the Archatech as seems to be relativly light. As for the QR question, when you are in a hurry (sunsets, sports, ect) a good Qr is worth the little added bulk and weight. I think once you use one you will be hooked. It usually takes a few tries to end up with the proper frame with a telephoto mounted. I'm using a manfrotto proball 308. Maybe I should try something else? The $300 heads aren't in the budget. Is there anything better for under $100? I need a ball head for packability. The Giotto medium head looks pretty good.
