One final point on this; having practised some more, I can get things to
where it's only wobbling horizontally (ie rotating around the base of the
monopod) if I'm careful and hold things the right way.
As another improvement:
Take a foam ball (one of those squeezy 'stress' ones, say).
Cut a cross in the top, about 2" deep into the body of the ball.
Wedge the foot of the monopod into the ball.
Voila, you have a base that's that much less spinn-y. It's not rigid, but
it's a noticeable improvement on rigid surfaces (on soil, I dunno). I think
if I carved away the bottom of the ball to make it flat against the floor,
that might help too, or tried a half-tennis-ball to get more grip, or that
sort of thing.
