A monopod is no substitute for a tripod, where a tripod is available,
allowed, and quick enough to get the shot. On the other hand, I've found
it to be a big improvement over hand held, esp. with long lenses.
It's not really possible to judge 'tack-sharp' from a scan reduced for
the net, but I found the last 2 pictuers on this page to be very sharp,
one of them taken standing in quite a stiff breeze on top of a ridge.

By the way, it's about 1.5+ mi.into the 4+ mile loop and 800 ft.up to
the top of the ridge, so I don't usually carry a tripod on my walks,
just my walking stick/monopod.

Hi Dan,
I will agree with you that achieving tack sharp images with a monopod is
impossible and in my opinion monopods in general are pretty much
worthless. <snip>
Anyway, I don't think you are doing anything wrong with a monopod. I
think it is just the nature of the beast.
