Reversing ring is cheapest, but:
leaves your rear element unhealthily exposed
disables TTL metering (except for OTF auto)
disables aperture stop-down (have to hold it closed with a penny
& rubber band over the d-o-f preview button or something).
Auto extension tubes are a bit more expensive (Vivitar ones are about 35
pounds)
There's also the Vivitar macro-focusing x2 converter, which is a normal
x2 teleconverter but with a helicoid so it's a variable extension tube
as well. Can be had for 20 pounds or so.
I have one of these and it produces good results with a 50/1.8. I also
have some extension tubes and a reversing ring (never did get around to
using the reversing ring). For the price of 2-way postage and a
cast-iron guarantee that I'll get them back before TOPE6 shooting
season, since you're in the UK, I might be persuaded to lend you any of
the above.

As someone else has pointed out, this has been done (though less
violently) to good effect.
