You are "right on" in both posts, Chris. Eric Clutton is his name. And
that is F.R.E.D. He told me that he is 87, going on 88, as he put it.
That would have made him about 17 in 1945, so the story holds up.
If I recall correctly, his sister came over for a visit about a year
ago. So, longevity must run in the family.
Thanks for the links. I had not thought about doing a search for his story.

If so, it could be “Flying Runabout Experimental Design”.

Thanks for commenting, Chris. He is an interesting fellow to engage in conversation.
When I first saw him around the airport, he was flying a low-powered small plane of his
own design, called "Fred", though I can't recall what the acronym meant.
Recently, he has had a Luscombe.

Yes, that looks good, Jim.
I had noticed his cap badge. It’s the one used on the caps of non-commissioned
officers and airmen. I had one for the first 4 months of my RAF career, before I completed
officer training and was commissioned – May 75.

I have come to the conclusion that, once we pass 85, we deserve the courtesy of
being shown in B&W. Here is Eric and his bird in this fashion. Chris, note
the RAF emblem on his cap.
