It's just for fun, John. You could as easily use 'enlarge' to mean make bigger,
if that's what you want. :-)
In the middle of a serious discussion of physical optics, a leavening of modest
humor can be nice.
Someone else here (Paul?) used it first, some time ago. Whether it migrated
here from elsewhere, I don't know.
