But some of us don't see it as insurance at all. Quite to the contrary. Any impact that manages to get to the filter is only a mm or two away from the front element. The filter will shatter and (at minimum) damage the coatings on the front element. By sticking the filter out there further you've slightly increased the chance of an impact. Best to just depend on religious use of a sturdy hood. As far as I'm concerned, UV filters as insurance is just the camera salesman's pitch with no real world data to support it.
