Sorry Brian - a personal bugbear - a 'socket' is a female receptacle and a
'plug' is a male. If you had wall PLUGS there would be live pins sticking
out!
The other sin (of tautology) is to call them 'plug sockets'.

I do not understand what you mean when you write

What's the difference? We have a choice here between appliances wired
permanently to the house system ( water-heater cylinders, bathroom
heaters, and sometimes electric stoves), otherwise it is 3-pin plugs _i_
upside down.
