When purchasing and ad-on SATA3/eSATA or a USB3 card make sure that you have the correct PCI slot available on your motherboard. PCI-Express 2.0. These cards use up considerable bandwidth and the older PCI slots aren't up to it. Any MB purchased in the last few years should be OK but check if the necessary slot isn't buried under the video card. And that the internal cables will reach the HD rack. May need a separate power supply connector but in any event you should do an energy calc to make sure your PS is up to the task. An off-the-shelf computer's PS usually has little headroom for extras. If the PS is marginal then do a cost effectiveness calc. May be time for an up grade. Brian, An add-on USB3 card may be your best bet if your MB is up to it.
