Lightnings featured quite a lot in my Air Cadet life. On holiday at
Anstruther in Fife one of the Leuchars Lightnings took off, went out to
sea, turned rather lazily then came screaming in, breaking the sound
barrier as it crossed the coast. At the time the public reaction to
sonic booms was being assessed, I guess that was part of it (1969).
One time at the Leuchars Air Show two Lightnings took off on a 'Badger
Hunt', during the show. Very impressive rate of climb! I imagine flying
one was like sitting on a couple of very large fireworks bolted one on
top of the other...
