A typical forward (combat area) airfield is 3500' and we would make full-stop landings on those. Then you have to back up as there's no taxiway nor a teardrop to turn around in. One of my favourite short-field landings is the one shown in the beginning of "Air America" where Mel Gibson lands a Palatus Turbo-Porter on a hillside. The grass field I flew in many years ago was a bit like that. On a calm summer day you took off downhill and landed uphill. You did the same thing in the winter when flying with skis.
