Ian,
I live approx 18 mls from the transporter bridge. I last walked the top
walkway about 30 yrs ago ...before it was condemned as "unsafe". At one time
there was a campaign to "dismantle the monstrosity" citing cost to the
ratepayers for repairs etc.
thank goodness a far sighted Council resisted these calls. The latest
renovation has, hopefully, secured its immediate future.
coincidently I met my daughter a day or two after you had posted the images,
she had just returned from taking the family across the transporter bridge on
the Gondola. william, the three year old was so impressed that he stayed on
with his father as a foot passenger. My daughter had to drive the car to the
far side (on his instructions) so that he and dad could cross back in the car.
He has not stopped talking about it!
The upper walkway will be open again to the public on the late August bank
holiday. As we fly back from the States two days before I will take him
over....and hopefully take some photos....BUt it is NOT easy with an energetic
three yr old!
I would love some high res files of your photos of the bridge if you are
prepared to share them!
There has been a documentary on Middlesborough Transporter bridge, and I
believe it featured in a tv series starring Jimmy Niall? where the bridge was
being dismantled and sold to the Americans to span the Grand Canyon or some
such nonsense!
sent from Colorado spgs Public Library.
