The faded Kodachromes were most certainly faded by projection. The film
essentially won't fade in dark storage. Color shift, yes, fade, no. But
Kodachromes had a very short projection life.
Some of my early (mid-eighties) Fujichromes and Ektachromes have experienced
some fading. Nothing I can do about it but digitize anything valuable. I am
noticing a pattern to which ones are fading, though. I used two different
labs for the majority of the processing and the stuff done in one lab is
more likely to fade than the other. In 1993, I moved to Illinois and I'm
not seeing any image deteriation of those slides yet.
