Some years ago, I was thinking it was time for that decision. No hurry,
though, as the woman who was living with me had had her own procedure
after her second child. Then I went with a visiting friend from Nepal to
meet a friend of his. The friend I was with had written the first book
on trekking in Tibet (final editing in my basement room). His friend was
at that time the second most published photographer of the Himalayas and
surrounding region, after Galen Rowell.
When we got to his house, instead of the anticipated meeting, we walked
into the start of a mourning for his sudden death. That morning, he had
walked out of a clinic after that little procedure. While standing on
the curb, waiting for his ride, he passed out, fell, hit his head on the
curb - and died.
Ever since, I've had an unreasoning fear of the procedure.
