Assuming that ACR is the same in Elements as in PS one can (in PS) set
preferences -> file handling -> prefer ACR for JPEG
such that opening a JPEG in PhotoShop will first open it in ACR and also
do an 8 to 16 bit conversion to minimize posterization during ACR
editing. When the image opens in PS it will still be in 16 bit form and
needs to be converted back down to 8 bits if you're going to save as
JPEG again.
