I guess what I should have said is that I appreciate them as tools but
sometimes like my tools to not strictly adhere to the form-follows-function
rule. Maybe I spend to much time lens fondling but I get some inspiration
from using a well designed and attractive tool. For example my Bahco
adjustable spanners with the Ergo grip, simple effective design and yet
still aesthetically appealing. The design shouldn't get in the way of use.

Am I double jointed or something like that and don't know it? I have never
had any difficulty taking vertical shots with any DSLR with a pentaprism
viewfinder that I've used. I dislike anything that adds size and/or weight
to provide a separate set of controls for vertical shooting.
I replied:
Again I agree with you, the point of cameras not having to have a vertical
grip to still function. Optional grips don't appear to be as well designed
as the horizontal grip in my opinion. The compromise of retaining a flat
surface for the tripod screw to be on being the major one that I dislike.
The option packs often seem to me to be an after though rather than a part
of the design. Perhaps I should have been clearer here and stated that the
size of the camera with a built in v grip was my problem too. The S3 is
nearly an inch shorter than the 1DsmkXTi(n) which was why I mentioned it.
Sorry I wasn't as clear in my first post.
