My first reaction now when faced with subjects in shade but with a sunny 
background is... don't take the picture there.  But if you can't avoid 
it I try to bring the foreground brightness up with flash such that the 
background is about 1/2 stop brighter.  Even brightness is risky, lesser 
brightness on a sunlit background causes the brain to cry "fake".  But 
you can't leave the subject in deep shadow so 1/2 stop over on the 
background is OK.
