"rubber-ey" is my problem. Even the trees and rocks seem to be flying around
too much when I use a monopod. I can imagine how it would help some who are
steadier than I am.

Another option atop your monopod is a hourglass shaped thing made of stiff
rubber from Manfrotto. If you are shooting fairly level, it becomes a bit,
well, rubber-ey, but if you are shooting at an angle, like at an airshow,
it's great, as you can "adjust" the angle easily as you follow action.
