Stripped gears in the mirror mechanism makes me guess they were plastic.
Got any model info? The shutter life of even the recently announced
30D and 5D (and improved over previous models) is 100,000 cycles. If
you sent a 5D for service on other than the shutter, and it displayed
that kind of mileage, if they fixed it they would undoubtedly want to
replace the shutter assembly as well. I think the shutter assembly for
a 20D is about $200. If this was a 10D, 300D or even some later model I
can see where it would be considered uneconomical to repair.
I don't have any hard data but memory tells me that film cameras have a
typical shutter life of about 30,000 cycles. That's a lot of film but
not a lot for digital so Canon (and I presume the others) have been
forced to improve shutters.
What's the shutter life of an OM-4Ti? Would Oly have given a different
story on the E-1? What's the life of the shutter on an E-1? Has Oly
ever said?
