On the E-300 (the E-500 probably behaves in the same manner) Auto ISO
always uses 100 ISO without flash. With the built-in flash popped up the
ISO sensitivity becomes higher (up to ISO 400) when the distance or the
aperture value is too high (out of the flash range for 100 ISO). You can
test this by using Aperture preferred AE at F8 and increasing the
distance. The ISO value can increase in 1/3 steps, like 160 or 320. With
an auxiliary flash like the FL-36 the ISO value stays at 100. When both
flashes are used (this can only be done on the E-300 and E-330 with the
FL-36) the ISO value also stays at 100.
