I was just thinking about this stuff, and realised that with digitals,
there's yet another thing to take into account.
Say you have a 1mp digital camera with a 50mm lens on it. (doesn't
really matter if that's pre or post multiplication factor). Take a shot.
Now take the same shot with the same lens, this time mounted on a 4mp
digital camera.
Second shot has twice as many pixels in each direction, so you could
crop out the middle half of the image and get a picture equal in quality
to the first image, but with "twice the focal length".
So, in some ways, increased pixel count also gives you a lens
multiplication factor. It's only relative, though.
