The shorter the focal length the sooner diffraction kicks in when trying to
get high aperture numbers. A macro would probably give the option of a
higher f no. to give enough DOF at close focus distances. Diffraction would
still be a problem, but you have the choice of whether it's fuzzy because of
DOF or diffraction.
