That sounds odd, because there isn't any spare room "North" of the battery
compartment in the camera, and because the DL1/3N in 10.8mm high. An SR-44
is 5.4mm high. I'll leave you to check the height of 2xSR-44!

It looks like someone has made a permenant change to the battery compartment
so that the only thing that it will take is the lithium battery. The more I
look the camera over the more problems I find. I have a 7 day return period
so I think it will go back.
