OK, how about this -- just use the LED that's already there, but tap into the 
yellow lead that powers it.  Run a jumper (drill through
the front casting under the leatherette?) directly to a switch (a chicklet 
under the leatherette, above the self-timer?), thence to
power, so that whenever the switch is closed, the LED is illuminated.  The down 
side is that if the switch is closed by the case or
bag, etc., it will run the batteries down.  And you'd have a lump under the 
leatherette....
