Couldn't you just tighten the rewind spool thing gently? If it stops
turning after a bit, then there's film in there (thus ...gently); if you can
keep spinning it, then it's empty.
(I also tend to try and remember set the film speed to 25 when I leave the
camera empty as another reminder)
