Rich,
Olympus-Japan sent me a motor drive socket cover for an OM-1 quite a few
months ago now. I had e-mailed them after getting a pretty much programmed
and very unhelpful response from Oly-USA trying to find out where I could
buy one.
The response from Oly-USA was along the lines of, "Thank you for your
interest in oly ....... We're sorry we can not repair your item as it is too
old.....".
Hmm; "repair"??
Oly-Japan simply wrote, "We are sorry you have had difficulty in obtaining a
.... What color is it black or chrome?".
I'd already conspicuously placed my full name and mailing address at the
bottom of the first e-mail. So I wrote "Chrome". Low and behold, about 2
weeks later I received my socket cover via priority air mail routed through
Zurich, Switzerland.
The Japanese still know how to run a business. And I was very pleased
indeed.
Cheers,
Lee

That was an ASSUMPTION I made when I bought into the system, based upon the
incredible level of service I observed the Japanese providing for tvs,
stereos, all manner of things electronic and photographic when I was in
Japan. They were tearing into the product right on the counter in front of
the customer. No waiting! It was awesome.
As long as good techs like John, Clint, Ken, and others abound, I'm not
going to worry much about service. Spare parts is another matter. We may
have to get real creative and/or wait for cannibalized parts to show in some
cases. Some may never turn up. For now, there isn't that much to worry
about for somuch hand wringing, at least for the OM system, it seems.
Anybody ever try to get parts from Japan, or while IN Japan, lately?
Rich
