Thanks everyone for your advice. I have just bought two books from
amazon. The first was well reviewed on amazon, but not mentioned through
this list - 'The Basic Book of Photography' by Tom Grimm, and the second
is 'John Hedgecoe's Guide to 35mm Photography'. Now all I need is a
camera and I'll be as happy as a boy in a sanbox!

Thanks again everyone for your help, I have been amazed by the number and
quality of responses I have received in the 2 days I have been on this
list! I sense that there is a vast and diverse pool of experience on
this list, you will probably have many more pictures from me in the
coming months...
