Hi Bill,

Congratulations for the new toy, similar to you, I got a Pen F 70/2
lens before I have a camera body. With the current price of SS4000 in
US, it is definitely the best buy. Unfortunately the SS4000 here is
HongKong is still very expensive (~900 without silverfast, you need to
pay another $120 for the bundle).

Concerning computer I just built an Atlhon 1.4GHz PC with 256M DDR Ram
and 40G DMA100 hard disk. The upgrade of my computer was not because
of the demand from photo editing, I was very happy with my 500MHz AMD
K6-2 with 256MB RAM as it handle the 2700dpi scan from my LS2000 very
smoothly. I was forced to upgrade it because of my new DV and the
Pinnacle Studio DV editing software. It really need a large hard disk
and very fast data processing speed. One hour of video need 13GB of
space and the processing time to transfer DV file to MPEG need hours
of works.

The computer market here may be different from the US, more home user
buy AMD instead of Intel as AMD is cheaper. With the same money you
can buy a AMD with 50% better performance (I mean the CPU only) and
AMD claim with the same CPU clock the Athlon is much faster than P4.
At that moment the DDR Ram is more attractive than the RAMBUS for P4
as the price are much cheaper (Both DDR and RAMBUS are very fast DRAM
technology to replace the outdated 133MHz SDRAM.) Concern Mac, I will
consider it is for professional use only (when you computer is
dedicated for one purpose). PC is more flexible and have much more
software/hardware at a cheaper price and even lots of freeware
available.

Just my two cents

Forgot to mention, the total upgrade with motherboard, CPU, fan, power
supply+casing, hard disk and RAM is around $450.
