freely, or is there usually strong resistance? this one seems to move
a bit stiff, but then i dont know how it should be when new.

There are click stops, but it shouldn't be overly difficult to turn it.

what are the listie's favouries for best lens while being *most*
compact? i'd like to add a wideangle, a 35mm, and 'praps a 100mm to my
kit.

all of the "2.8" lenses are compact and perform well. This would
include 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 85mm and 100mm. The superwide "3.5" lenses
are also very good, including the 16mm, 18mm and 21mm, and are also
very compact. See the E-sif for more details.
Be seeing you.
