Hi, Brian,
I'm pretty much a list newbie too so I'll howdy at ya from Texas. I browsed
the archives for the past year or two but waited 'til I bought an OM-1 about
a month ago before joining.
Regarding the shutter speed ring, mine turns with a fair amount of springy
resistance and snicks into place neatly. No grinding (altho' at some points
there's a mild sound reminiscent of a smooth gearshift in a fine car) and
easily done with two fingers. It feels normal so I've assumed it is normal.
Dunno a thing about the shift lenses, but have you visited Gary Reese's lens
test web site? It is a rare gem among web sites.

I don't actually possess a Zuiko lens - yet (mine came with Fat Viv) - but
I've fondled quite a few lately and can tell you my favorites.
These are on my "acquire ASAP" list:
50mm f/3.5 macro. Not the fastest or sharpest wide open according to tests,
but more than adequate for my purposes and small.
35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom. You have to look at this one twice to realize it's
a zoom, that's how tiny it is. About the same size as a normal lens. I'd
gladly sacrifice Fat Viv over open flames for one of these.
70-150mm f/4 zoom. Light, compact, two-touch mechanism, covers my most-used
tele lengths. Faults have been noted with it (covered in the archives), but
none that I can see in photos taken with it.
These are on my "down the road" list:
85mm f/2 - light, compact, uses the Zuiko-standard 49mm filter (as do the
three above).
Something seriously wide but with good rectilinear properties in the 18-24mm
range.
The auto-bellows or telescoping auto-extension tube and 80mm or 135mm macro
lens for some serious macro projects I have in mind.
That's about it. I'm not a serious gear freak and I use mostly Canon FD
stuff for regular shooting. But I wanted a top notch very compact
lightweight SLR with excellent macro capabilities for a special project and
the OM filled the bill.
Be very, very careful, tho' - it is the most addictive camera experience on
the planet.
Lex
(BTW, the 135mm telephoto remains my favorite focal length for portraits. I
use a fairly generic and ancient Lentar preset, f/3.5, and probably will
eventually add a Zuiko.)

Greetings all! i'm new to the list, and new to this camera brand we've all
chosen to shoot. Just recently purchased a chrome OM-1n with the 50/1.8 and
135/3.5.
* the shutter speed ring on the body -- should it turn somewhat freely, or
is there usually strong resistance? this one seems to move a bit stiff, but
then i dont know how it should be when new.
* lastly, at the risk of bringing up well-trodden turf on this list, what
are the listie's favouries for best lens while being *most* compact? i'd
like to add a wideangle, a 35mm, and 'praps a 100mm to my kit.
