OK. I'll bite. Aren't you assuming that only gravity and lens momentum were
involved in the doinking? What of lenses sitting still that get hit by
something else? Or what of two lenses banging together in a bag; one large
and heavy and one small and light? Which one shows the most signs of wear?
Yeah, sure I am really grasping here, and it's probably irrelevent since I
don't mess with lenses that show any dents or dings, but I'm not quite so
sure about bodies.

My current car camera is an OM-2000 that I keep in a soft-side cooler. The
OM-2000 uses a combination of plastic baffles and foam seals, with the
seals appearing to be somewhat secondary or redundant. So I'm not all that
worried about it baking in the car. Plus, it's still under warranty and I
have absolutely no attachment to it. I got it to use, use hard, use up:
whatever.
Recently, and part of the reason for the intial thread, I've been tempted
by a beater OM-1 w/50/1.4 that is actually cheaper than just the lens alone
from another source. The downside is that the meter on that one doesn't
work and while it'd do astrophotos just fine, I think a car or everyday
carry camera ought to have a working meter. So maybe I'll get it for the
lens, mount that lens on the OM-2000 and toss the beater OM-1 into the
closet with the rest. ;-)
