Hi Lex,
I agree, at least for myself. You can get a sense of how much lite
there is & be within a stop or so.
In my "Science of photography" course at Ryerson, where we looked at
how all the optics & chemistry etc. worked, I told the instructor
this when he was extolling the virtues of measurement. He didn't
believe me. So I estimated the exposure right there, 1/60 at f/2.8
under the fluorescents, as I recall. And I was right, to his chagrin.
But I think you need to be consciously using a light meter and noting
the recommended exposure for a while in order to be able to learn
this skill.
