Mike Swaim:
Recently, and part of the reason for the intial thread, I've been tempted
by a beater OM-1 w/50/1.4 that is actually cheaper than just the lens alone
from another source. The downside is that the meter on that one doesn't
work and while it'd do astrophotos just fine, I think a car or everyday
carry camera ought to have a working meter. So maybe I'll get it for the
lens, mount that lens on the OM-2000 and toss the beater OM-1 into the
closet with the rest. ;-)<
Heck, Mike, send me that beater! I'll make a one-film camera outta it.
Seriously, tho', try it with a forgiving film like Tri-X (if you do your own
darkroom work), one of the chromogenic monochrome C41 process films, or most
ASA 400 color print films. Fuji 800 Superia X-tra is great too - very
forgiving stuff. Spend a day or two metering every condition you can think
of and make a note of 'em. After that you'll probably find you seldom need
to meter anyway.
When I was a teenager the meter on my Miranda went out a year or so after
the warranty expired. I just kept shooting it with Tri-X. Very rarely shot
an unprintable neg.
