You're right, it's a short-mount lens. You would have to have extension
in-between the lens and the 1.4xa to make this work. Actually, this is a useful
combination in theory. It would multiply magnification while keeping the
effective 135mm focal length, thus maintaining working distance. John Shaw
discusses this in Closeups In Nature using Nikon equipment. I just tried putting
this combo together and found the diameter of the 1.4xa's nose is too big to fit
in the extension tube. Using the 135 on the 65-116 and the 1.4xa behind that
does work. Gives quite a lot of magnification with good working distance...hmm I
could see chasing butterflies with this combination!
