One good rule for NiCd batteries is to ALWAYS remove them from the
charger when warm. Slow charging is always better for longer lifetime.

NiCd's are best for high current stuff like this - better than alkaline
or NiMh because of lower internal resistance. Lead acid batteries may
be comparable?
