Well, you can, I've been told...
I use a Saiko Eco charger for ordinary alkalines and NiCads
(separately)

Alkalines - charge often, goes up to ~ 25 times if charged often.
NiMh - 500 recharges, but very sensitive to overcharging
NiCd - 1000 recharges
