This clever little lens is very shallow. It reduced the overall depth of
an OM camera enough that the camera could slip into a (large) shirt
pocket. This is what makes the lens so desirable -- what other 35mm SLR
can do that? >>
Both Pentax and Konica had 40mm lenses. The Pentax 40mm pancake lens is very
collectible now.
The Pentax ME and MX models with the 40mm pancake lens I believe are smaller
than an OM1 with the OM 40mm lens. I think the Pentax M series bodies are
slightly smaller than the OM bodies 1 and 2 bodies, albeit they came out years
later. (Someone can confirm or refute this. I remember, I think, at the
time that people thought, yes, OK the Pentax ME is smaller than the OM2, but
the ME does not have a shutter speed dial.... but I think the MX and ME Super
are full featured.)
The Nikon EM and FG are compact bodies also, with the 50mm E lens, but as far
as I know, Nikon did not put out a 40mm lens. The Nikon EM I understand is a
programmed exposure only camera, but the FG adds aperture priority mode and
also has TTL flash, (which makes it the equivalent of an OM-PC, but smaller.)
I read recently that Pentax is putting out a new very compact 40mm lens for
their AF cameras, along with one or two other new fixed focal length AF lenses
(I think one is a 90mm.) These are going to be limited edition models with
real metal lens barrels, I read. People are excited. A new compact Pentax
AF camera (I do not know the models) with the new 40mm lens may be the close
to the same size as an OM1 with a 40mm, and is probably the most compact setup
of AF SLR 35mm cameras made now.
