The Vivitar 55mm macro lens appeared in 1975. It's design is 5 elements in
4 groups and weighs 11oz (312g). Minimum focus from film plane is 8&1/2" which
achieved a 1:1 magnification ratio.
Competing camera maker lens of the era were usually f3.5 lenses that would
focus
to 1:2 without extension. The lens was considered very sharp and achieved
flat field resolution all the way down to it's closest focus point. It's only
downside was it's comparative bulk when set side by side with a camera makers
lens.
