Yes. Contrast reduction mask IS an unsharp mask. You expose the negative thru
a diffusion sheet of some kind to get a degree of unsharpness. It actually
increases the local sharpness and contrast, while decreasing the overall
contrast in the print. You can prove it mathematically. I
I do one whenever I need to to make a good Ciba, which is about 750f the
time. With good registration equipment, it becomes fairly easy, except for the
dust and Sir Isaacs' rings.

I'm watching the technology. Thanks for the tip on the Konica. I'm pretty
impressed with what my Stylus 800 can do with the photo quality paper, I must
admit. But until it can do a 20x24 that looks as good as a Ciba, I'm just not
there. There is Iris technology right now that's VERY interesting. But still
pretty expensive.
