Here are a few steps that may help:
(a) If you paid with a credit card, notify your credit card
company immediately(!) that the purchase is in dispute, and
put a hold on the payment. Nothing makes a mail-order company
listen to a complaint faster than an unpaid bill.
(b) Don't send them e-mail. Instead, find out the name and
address of their chief corporate customer relations officer
(usually, a VP) and send your written complaint with regular
snail-mail.
(c) Mention in your letter that if the problem is not resolved
in a mutually satisfactory manner within X days/weeks/months,
you'll file your complaint with the BBB (Better Business Bureau).
(d) Don't ever mention DeLorme's Street Atlas USA as a reference.
(e) Never ever schedule anything in SC with a time window of 36
hours (unless, of course, it's a round of golf).
(e) Never ever use the phrase "colonial U.S." -- we are not a
colony anymore, not since 1776 (but some folks have very long
memories around here). Use "Continental US" -- we like the
way is sounds.
P.S. For the record, the last three items are semi- or full-size ;-)
Good luck,
/Gary Schloss.
