I recall the F/4.0 vs F/3.6 was in keeping with the marketing practice of offering a faster pro level (Zuiko) lens matched with a slower but higher cost/performance ratio (S Zuiko) lens. The OM System Lens Handbook also emphasizes that microprism focusing is aided by the F/3.6 aperature. While it would have made sense to go faster remember that in those days fast zooms were optical compromises and highly expensive. At least Oly gave their engineers a chance at glory with the eventual F/2.8 I assume that previous discussions have praised that glass?
