In John:
<< In terms of light output, I think that the T32 is just right when using
f/16 to f/32
type apertures for small subjects. You definately need a lot of power to
illuminate
things properly. >>
Of course, that depends on the macro lens.
Here are some excerpts from a recent e-mail which should have been posted to
all:
The downward tilting flash reflector of the T-32 is a big plus for shoe
mounted macro work with a 50 mm. It has two manual settings, which are
important to me because I do not rely on OTF flash metering in macro
plant/flower photography. There is too much black background for it to be
accurate.
The following manual settings are what I use for ISO 50 film and the T-32
mounted on Bounce Grip 2 or the hot shoe, might give folks an idea of the
flash power of the T-32. (The same settings work without Bounce Grip
mounting). The ratios are the reproduction ratio setting on the lens. The
Low/High is the manual flash setting. These are for mid-reflectance subjects.
Dark subjects get 1/2 stop more exposure and light subjects get 1/2 less.
w/ 50 mm F/3.5 macro using the diffusion filter on the flash (neutral density
= 2x)
1:10 High f/16-22
1:8 Low f/12.5
1:7 Low f/14.5
1:5 Low f/16
1:4 Low f/20
1:3 Low f/18
1:2.5 Low f/20
1:2 Low f/16
For 50 mm F/2.0 macro, just use the light grey neutral density filter and open
one stop.
135mm f/4 Macro (no flash filter, all at High manual power setting)
1:10 f/9
1:9 f/9
1:8 f/9
1:7 f/10
1:6 f/11
1:5 f/13
1:4 f/13
1:3 f/13
1:2.125 f/16
The amazing thing is that these manual settings are more often than not dead
on. I haven't worked out manual settings for my 80 mm F/4.0, which continues
to cause me wasted film. But then I usually go with two T-32's for 1:1 work.
Now that I have a T-20, I'll take your recommendation and try the T-32 and
T-20 combo to get modeling.
If anyone finds a bargain source for the 2:1 Close Up Lens for the 80 mm F/4.0
Auto Zuiko, let me know. Looks like a bargain these days is under $50.
