In the Netherlands, Harry Mulisch was long considered to be one of the
three big post war writers (WW II that is, the Netherlands did not
participate in WW I. The other writers would be W.F. Hermans

I think 'The Discovery of Heaven
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Discovery_of_Heaven>' is also worth
reading, it is considered his masterpiece over here. I liked it very much.
I'm intrigued by the herring dish. Maybe if I visit Sweden ;-)
